Africa Goes to the Polls

Central African Republic - Francois Bozize was reelected to a second term in January.

Uganda - In power since 1986, Yoweri Museveni beat his main rival Kizza Besigye for the third time in February's election.

Benin
- Thomas Boni Yayi was re-elected in March.

Niger - Veteran opposition leader Mahamadou lssoufou won the March 2011 presidential poll held to end a year-long military junta.

Chad - ldriss Deby won a fourth term in April in a poll boycotted by the opposition.

Djibouti -Voters re-elected President lsmael Omar Guelleh in April after the constitution was amended in 2010 allowing him to run for a third term.

Nigeria - Interim president Good luck Jonathan won April's presidential poll with 59 per cent of the vote against his main rival 's 32 per cent.

Seychelles - Incumbent James Michel won a second term in May. He previously served as Vice-President under his predecessor, France Albert Rene from 1996 to 2004.

Sao Tome and Principe - Former president Manuel Pinto da Costa was returned to power in August, 20 years after losing office.

Cape Verde - Opposition candidate Jorge Carlos Fonseca won presidential elections in a second-round victory in August

Zambia - Veteran opposition candidate Michael Sata won the presidency in September, unseating a government that had been in power for 20 years.

Cameroon - In power since 1982, Paul Biya won a new seven-year term in October.
Liberia -Incumbent Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of the Unity Party won the run-off vote with 90.7 per cent of the ballot in November.

DRC - Former guerrilla fighter Joseph Kabila secured another term in November elections, a win still disputed by his main opposition rival.
